Boston Mayor Marty Walsh criticized the MBTA’s fare hike proposal and urged its governing board to take into account customer complaints before going ahead with the plan.

“People need to know that the service is getting better,” Walsh told the Boston Herald.

Walsh called the MBTA Fiscal and Management Control Board’s decision “tough.”

The board is considering hiking MBTA fares by 6.3 percent, boosting subway fares from $2.25 to $2.40, and bus trips from $1.70 to $1.80. The increase would generate $32 million to help close a structural budget deficit, MBTA leaders say.
