Salem Five is moving into Norfolk County with the opening of a new location on Chestnut Street in Needham.

Janis Dodge, Salem Five’s head of retail banking, said Needham had been on the bank’s radar for a while, but they started seriously investigating the opportunity about a year and a half ago, when a customer suggested the location near the Needham Junction commuter rail station.

When Salem Five looked into it a little further, they decided to move sooner rather than later, taking over and making over a former Bank of America branch at 355 Chestnut St.

“We still see the value of serving our customers and giving them a choice, whether it’s through technology or a branch. We want to be available to them any way they choose to bank,” she said.

The new location will boast an open concept floor plan with cash recyclers, a comfortable lounging area with sofas and a “star bar” where staff can demonstrate technologies for their customers, like Apple Pay and person-to-person payments, she said. The branch will be open seven days a week, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays, and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sundays.

Additionally, the new location will be staffed with a commercial lender, a mortgage lender and an investment advisor, Dodge said. Salem Five is also decorating the branch with a mosaic mural made by a Boston-based artist, and they’ve enlisted a Needham bakery, Treat Cupcake Bar, to make cookies special for the occasion.

While the bank is still considering further expansion opportunities into Essex, Middlesex and Norfolk counties, Dodge said she doesn’t anticipate any major moves in the next six months.

“It really combines the best of everything: the best of where banking is heading with the values of yesterday,” she said. “I’m just excited. It’s a great location, we have a great team, we love the community and we feel it’s going to be a value for our customers.”

The bank will kick off its grand opening next weekend with a special winter weekend celebration with a skating rink, photo booth and a hot cocoa bar.
