Santander Bank plans to close at least 16 Massachusetts branches this year.
“Like many industries, our customers’ preferences have changed, with more customers choosing to bank with us online,” Santander said in a statement. “Therefore, we are reimagining the customer and employee experience by simplifying our processes, refining our branch footprint, and increasing our investment in digital capabilities to align with the evolving needs of our customers.”
A majority of the closings affect communities south of Boston, according to regulatory filings with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. The closings include one of Santander’s two Martha’s Vineyard locations and two of the bank’s five New Bedford branches. Branches in Danvers, Lynnfield, Fitchburg and Worcester will also close.
The branches closing include:
- 30 Barlows Landing Road, Pocasset
- 423 Route 134, South Dennis
- 3 Oak Bluffs Avenue, Oak Bluffs
- 16 Park St., Attleboro
- 141 North Main St., Fall River
- 440 Mt. Pleasant St., New Bedford
- 58 County St., New Bedford
- 778 South Franklin St., Holbrook
- 75 Washington St., Canton
- 144 Main St., Norfolk
- 20 Central Square, Bridgewater
- 584 Washington St., Whitman
- 16 Centre Court, Lynnfield
- 17 Maple St., Danvers

After closing about 30 Massachusetts locations in 2021, Santander had just a few branch relocations and one consolidation to a new branch in Boston last year. The $99 billion-asset Santander will have around 140 branches in Massachusetts after the branches close later this spring.
