The Massachusetts district of the Small Business Administration (SBA) said recently that its fee waiver program launched last year saved Bay State small business borrowers more than a million dollars.

The program zeros out fees on all SBA-guaranteed loans under $150,000. A borrower taking out a loan of less than $50,000, for instance, could wind up paying as much as $2,500 in fees under some scenarios. The SBA’s program launched in 2013 and this is the third year it’s achieved statewide savings of at least $1 million.

Moreover, SBA Massachusetts District Director Robert Nelson said that Massachusetts had achieved 5.4 percent of the SBA’s total fee savings nationally.

“We have 6.5 million people in the state and you look at the whole country, so for us to be seeing that much of a percentage of the fee savings across the country, it just shows how much we are producing here with these loans under $150,000,” he said.

In the fiscal year 2016, 1,668 borrowers statewide took advantage of the program. Most of those borrowers – 1,043, to be precise – took out loans under $50,000, according to information supplied by the SBA.

He also noted the SBA is still running its Veterans Advantage program, which among other things, waives fees on loans up to $350,000 for veterans, their spouses and widowed spouses of those who died during service or because of a service-related disability. That program runs through September, and the SBA has yet to decide whether to extend it.

“Across the country, across different markets, it’s very challenging to get low dollar loans under $150,000,” Nelson said. “We’re just very fortunate that we have here in Massachusetts lenders who are actively using the SBA programs in all of the various loan categories and sizes.”
