South StationSouth Station is closing off access to the Red Line escalator and stairs at night for the remainder of December and into early January to allow for construction at the station.

Between Dec. 19 and Jan. 5, the escalator and stairs will close at approximately 9 p.m. and reopen at 5 a.m. every day, excluding Christmas Eve, Christmas, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. On these dates, access to the stairs and escalator will be open as usual.

The station will have engineering and security staff on hand to assist as needed, and travelers will be re-routed, on dates when the stairs and escalator are closed.

"We thank all of the commuters and travelers of South Station for their patience during this exciting time of transformation for the Station. Travelers will be redirected and we do not expect any disruption of service due to the construction," Mark Smith, market managing director at Equity Office, which is managing the renovations, said in a statement.

As part of its renovations, South Station recently opened new women’s restrooms, and work on updated men’s restrooms is underway. New tenants CVS, Starbucks and Tavern in the Square will move into the station in early 2014, and Barbara’s Bestsellers recently made its return this year.
