Joseph Hooley

After more than 30 years with the company, State Street Corp. CEO Joseph L. Hooley will retire at the end of the year, according to a regulatory filing this morning.
Hooley, 60, will will remain as a director and chairman of the board of directors through 2019. State Street’s board of directors has appointed Ronald P. O’Hanley, 60, to replace Hooley upon his retirement.
“Our most significant differentiator at State Street will always be our people, and my greatest source of pride over the past eight years has been to lead this talented 36,000-strong team,” Hooley said in a statement. “I am very confident that Ron has the right qualities, expertise and vision to lead the next phase of State Street’s growth. Ron brings tremendous passion and energy to the role, as well as a unique perspective having been a State Street client. I know that his perspectives and background will serve us very well as we seek to strengthen client engagement across the organization and create a more seamless experience for our clients.”
The board also appointed O’Hanley to serve the remainder of the year as the company’s president and COO, effective Nov. 6 until the end of the year. Michael F. Rogers, who O’Hanley is succeeding as president and COO, will also retire at the end of 2017.

O’Hanley joined State Street as president and CEO of State Street Global Advisors, the company’s investment management division, in April 2015. He was appointed vice chairman of State Street in January 2017. Prior to joining State Street, O’Hanley served as president of Asset Management & Corporate Services for Fidelity Investments, a financial and mutual fund services corporation. Before that, O’Hanley spent 13 years in leadership positions at Mellon Bank and Bank of New York Mellon including vice chairman of Mellon Financial Corp. and Bank of New York Mellon and CEO of BNY Mellon Asset Management.
Hooley first came to State Street in 1986. Previous positions he has held with the company include president and COO, executive vice president and head of investor services, and vice chairman and global head of investment servicing and investment research and trading. Hooley joined State Street’s board of directors in 2009, and became chairman of the board in 2011.
Hooley also currently serves as a member of the board of directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston and a member of the Financial Services Forum in Washington D.C.
