Stonehill College today will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new solar field, the largest on any college campus in New England.

The 2.7 megawatt, 15-acre solar field was constructed by Solect Energy of Hopkinton. It is located on the school’s main campus and contains 9,000 solar panels, which will make it the 11th largest solar installation on a college campus nationwide.

The solar field will save the college more than $185,000 a year and account for 20 percent of Stonehill’s electrical usage, according to a press release.

The opening of the solar field follows a number of green initiatives introduced by Stonehill College in recent years. In 2012, the college phased out the use of bottled water, and in 2011 it created The Farm at Stonehill to supply local food banks, soup kitchens and other meal providers with organic, sustainably grown fruits and vegetables.
