The job market may still be rough, but if you work in finance or accounting, your outlook is brightening. That’s according to new survey data released this month by the Boston-based staffing firm the Mergis Group.

According to the results of the firm’s recent Finance and Accounting Employee Confidence Index, confidence among workers in the finance and accounting sectors in the second quarter of this year spiked 10 points over the previous quarter.

"We are seeing a lot of movement in the finance and accounting space, particularly in areas such as insurance underwriting and financial analysis," Steve McMahan, president of Randstad Finance & Accounting, said in a statement.  "We’ve also seen a major spike in transactional-based accounting searches, technical accounting, domestic tax and audit searches at the analyst, accountant and manager levels."

The survey also found that 42 percent of finance and accounting employees believe the economy is improving, a 12-percent increase from the first quarter of 2013. The percentage of those workers who believe the economy is weakening took a sharp, 16-point drop, as well.

Nearly a third of finance and accounting employees believe more jobs are available, up 11 points from the previous quarter. Forty-two percent of survey respondents were confident in their ability to find a new job, down seven points from the previous quarter, but just 15 percent replied that they were not confident in their ability to find a new job, down 11 points from the previous quarter.

The quarterly study, which was conducted online by Harris Interactive, surveyed 173 U.S. finance and accounting employees, aged 18 and older, in April, May and June.
