US2, the master developer of Somerville’s Union Square, has leased 2,500 square feet at 31 Union Square for its local headquarters.
The Chicago-based development team, a partnership of Chicago-based Magellan Development and Mesirow Financial, will occupy the former Elegant Furniture showroom, which closed last fall. A US2 representative will staff the office full-time to provide information to the public about US2’s plans to revitalize the square.
The location also will serve as coworking space for local start-ups.
“The addition of new coworking space in the heart of the square is an important next step in establishing a stronger commercial base and adding more daytime traffic,” US2 President Greg Karczewski said in a statement.
The new headquarters is expected to open this spring.
US2 has proposed building 500 apartments next to the planned location for the new Union Square station on the MBTA’s Green Line Extension as the first phase of the redevelopment, which could include up to 2.3 million square feet of commercial and residential space.
