Massachusetts residents pay some of the highest energy bills in the country, according to a new study from WalletHub.
Massachusetts ranked 49th out of all 50 states and the District of Columbia for total energy costs, averaging $352 per month, 46th for monthly natural gas cost, averaging $63 per month, and 46th for monthly home heating oil cost, averaging $73.48 per month, according to WalletHub’s study, “2015’s Most & Least Energy-Expensive States.” The study ranked the total monthly energy bills of all 50 states and the District of Columbia by eight metrics, including costs of electricity, natural gas, motor fuel and home heating.
Residents of the District of Columbia have the lowest total energy costs, averaging $223 per month, followed by Colorado ($244), Washington ($245), Oregon ($261) and Arizona ($268). Connecticut residents had the highest total energy costs, averaging $410 per month.
Nationally, about 7.3 percent of the average consumer’s total annual income goes to energy costs, according to the report.
