An iconic former market building in downtown Worcester, now home to an adult day care center, has missed out on the city’s downtown building boom to the disappointment of local leaders.

According to the Worcester Telegram & Gazette, the Worcester Market at 627 Main St. is likely to stay an adult day center for the time being after a deal to redevelop the property fell through in 2017.

The plans called for a $6 million investment from developer Jeffrey Reppucci to turn the property into a bustling public market. Now with a stable tenant, owner Dmitry Zhivotovsky told the paper he doesn’t plan to sell. The paper interviewed Reppucci, Zhivotovsky and city leaders to determine why the earlier deal fell through.

The 44,000 square-foot building was last sold in 2014 for $1.75 million, according to Worcester property records. The building is assessed for $1.61 million.
