Shawmut Design and Construction has completed a new facility at Worcester Polytechnic Institute designed to foster collaboration between students, faculty and outside partners.

Designed by Gensler, the 5-story, 78,000-square-foot Foisie Innovation Studio and Messenger Hall contains 140 dorm rooms built above two stories of academic spaces, including classrooms, an innovation center, robotics lab, makerspace and business incubators with a 2-story atrium.

The 3-story residential component includes single and double rooms, tech studios and lounges.

“The driving force behind this project was a need to create a space that helps spark new opportunities and drive student innovation,” Ron Simoneau, vice president at Shawmut, said in a statement.

The $47.7 million project is seeking LEED Gold certification with sustainability measures such as demand-controlled ventilation, low-flow fixtures and Forest Stewardship Council-certified wood products.
