Starting today, site preparation work can begin at city-sponsored construction projects in Worcester that meet the state’s definition of an “essential” construction project – chiefly, housing, mixed-use, infrastructure and health care projects.

City Manager Edward Augustus Jr. made the announcement Sunday. The announcement was first reported by the Worcester Telegram.

The state had suspended work on these projects, which include Polar Park and the city’s South High School, on April 3.

Going forward, construction projects must comply with the state’s COVID-19 construction safety guidelines and will be required to submit a safety plan and signed affidavit.

The move comes just days after Boston announced it would allow city-permitted “essential” construction work to restart there on May 18, with preliminary staging work to start last week.
