Seeking to marry its own strategy for innovation with the hub of innovative organizations in Boston’s Seaport District, Worcester Polytechnic Institute announced Thursday it plans to open a 6,400 square-foot space in the Seaport this fall.

WPI’s seven-year lease at 303 Congress St. puts the university “amidst some of the nation’s leading innovators and technology companies with whom WPI will look to create helpful and strategic partnerships around curricular and research opportunities,” the school said in its announcement.

“WPI is committed to advancing the important role that universities play in the state’s innovation economy,” WPI President Laurie Leshin said in a statement. “We share a common interest and expertise with many of the most innovative companies and professionals working in the commonwealth, and our presence in this neighborhood will allow us to build new partnerships, strengthen existing collaborations, and bring more opportunities back to our campus and to our home town of Worcester.”

Stephen Flavin, vice president and dean of academic and corporate engagement at WPI, said the new Seaport space will be used for “industry-centric meetings, classes, projects and events that are tailored to the interests and needs of our neighbors who are working in areas such as healthcare technology, robotics, cybersecurity and big data.”

The facility will also house WPI’s Boston Project Center, a space students can use as they engage in research activities with the benefit of being close to government agencies and industry partners, the university said.

WPI said its new Boston space is under renovation but will be opened this fall. The university said it plans to host events for students, alumni, staff and guests at the new space as part of its opening.
