A Jamaica Plain monastery would be converted into apartments and expanded with a mass timber-framed condominium building under a pending development proposal.

Holland Properties of Boston plans to redevelop the 2.9-acre property at 920 Centre St., currently the site of the Franciscan Poor Clare Nuns Monastery, built in the 1930s.

The mass timber building would be constructed behind the existing monastery and include 90 condominiums, including an unspecified number of income-restricted units.

The existing 54,000-square-foot building would be converted into 20 apartments along 20,000 square feet of uses including offices, daycare, a gymnasium and community space, developer John Holland said in a notification letter to the Boston Planning & Development Agency. The project would include 121 parking spaces.

Holland Properties will pursue approval under a planned development area process.

Use of mass timber framing has increased in popularity following building code updates approving its use in taller buildings.

Also known as cross-laminated timber, the material has attracted interest from developers because of its potential for cost savings compared with steel or concrete construction. The engineered wood product consists of layered lumber stacked and glued at 90-degree angles to provide structural rigidity.
