Brandeis University’s newest dorm project will include 631 student beds, lounges and kitchens on each floor and a multipurpose event lounge.
Construction is scheduled to begin in June, Brandeis announced this week, in the first phase of a campus-wide plan to upgrade student housing through new construction, renovations and demolition of older dormitories.
Designed by William Rawn Associates, the new residence hall will be divided into 14 “neighborhoods” of 50 students, each comprising single and double bedroom units. Each floor will include lounges and kitchens.
“This is more than just a building project — it’s a statement about our priorities,” Brandeis Interim President Arthur Levine said in a statement. “We are investing in our students and in the future of Brandeis. This residence hall will support community, well-being and the dynamic student experience that defines our university.”
A multi-purpose room available for lectures and catered events will have capacity for 150 people.
Providence-based Dimeo Construction is construction manager for the project, which will include all-electric building systems, rooftop solar panels and Passive House building envelope standards. The project is scheduled for completion in spring 2027.
Greater Boston’s higher education sector is providing a steady source of construction work during the downturn in office, lab and multifamily projects.
Tufts University will break ground this month on the largest dormitory in school history, a 677-bed residence hall on Boston Avenue in Medford.
The project is a partnership with Capstone Development Partners of Birmingham, Alabama.
More colleges are partnering with private housing developers to reduce dormitory project costs. Last year, Northeastern University received approval from the Boston Planning & Development Agency for a 23-story, 1,240-bed housing tower at 840 Columbus Ave. in a partnership with American Campus Communities of Austin, Texas.
