Seven local housing agencies will split approximately $2.17 million in federal Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) funds earmarked for permanent housing and case management for homeless veterans.
The Massachusetts funds are part of a larger, national effort to distribute $46.2 million to public housing agencies to help support the country’s 6,790 homeless veterans. The program is being run in conjunction with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and local housing agencies.
"Over the past three years, HUD helped thousands of homeless veterans find a permanent place to call home, while VA provided medical treatment, case management and other services to address their specific needs," said HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan. "We have no greater mission than to prevent and end homelessness, especially for those brave men and women who risked their lives to protect our nation."
The local agencies expected to receive funding are:
- Boston Housing Authority – $520,356
- Cambridge Housing Authority – $350,721
- Worcester Housing Authority Boston – $166,269
- Northampton Housing Authority – $129,069
- Braintree Housing Authority – $309,462
- Chelmsford Housing Authority – $211,410
- Mass. Department of Housing & Community Development – $496,276
