Holyoke-based PeoplesBank recently received the American Bankers Association’s Community Commitment Award for sustainable banking.

The ABA announced the six Community Commitment Award recipients at its annual convention in New Orleans on Monday. PeoplesBank was the only Massachusetts bank to be recognized. The bank received the sustainable banking award for its Banking on the Environment program, through which it has built three LEED-registered branches; installed EV charging stations; and financed more than $60 million in wind-, solar- and hydroelectric-energy projects.

The ABA selection committee chose the six banks honored from more than 150 nominations based on the creativity and thoughtfulness of programs – traditional or innovative in nature and structure – that embody the ideals of corporate social responsibility and demonstrate success in measurable terms.

"This year’s winners exemplify the mission of the Community Commitment Awards," said Frank Keating, ABA president and CEO, said in a statement. "It’s not about how large your bank is, but how large of an impact you can make in your community."
