Roxbury born-and-bred R&B quintet New Edition officially has a place on the map in its hometown.
Boston’s Public Improvements Commission voted unanimously this week to rename Dearborn Street in Roxbury as “New Edition Way.”
Last summer, Boston officials acknowledged the group’s impact on the local music scene with an Aug. 30 block party and ceremonial street renaming in the neighborhood where the group was formed in 1978.
The group even completed a 30-city tour during the first half of the year named the “New Edition Way Tour,” including a Feb. 15 performance at TD Garden,
But formal renaming of a street requires a legal process, including notification of abutters and a vote of the Public Improvements Commission.
Keith Williams, Boston’s deputy chief of operations, presented the renaming petition to the board this week.
“The street has always been home to them as a group,” Williams said.
All five legal abutters countersigned the petition, indicating their support.
“This honor is mind-blowing in the most awesome way. 02119 IS and WILL always be my home,” member Ricky Bell said in an announcement last year about the street name swap.
