The property at 867 Iyannough Road was formerly a Days Inn, which closed on Aug. 4 to undergo a nine-month comprehensive renovation and expansion, including the addition of a third story and guest elevators. The new hotel, a 125-room Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott, is scheduled to open in May of 2015 and will operate as a Marriott franchise, owned and managed by Konover Hotel Corp. in West Hartford, Conn.

"It is a privilege to be here in this historic region and to work with all of you to bring the Fairfield Inn & Suites brand to Hyannis," James Wakim, president and CEO of the Simon Konover Co., said in a statement.

Monday’s groundbreaking ceremony included Rep. William R. Keating (D-MA9), officials from the town of Barnstable, plus representatives of The Simon Konover Company, Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce/Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Hyannis Area Chamber of Commerce.
