Partial demolition of Boston’s Government Center Garage is suspended following a weekend structural collapse that killed a 51-year-old construction worker.

Peter Monsini of Easton, an employee for JDC Demolition, died Saturday night after a portion of an upper floor buckled and the equipment he was operating plummeted nine stories to the ground below.

“We at JDC Demolition are deeply saddened by the tragic incident that occurred on Saturday at the Government Center Garage project,” JDC, a division of project general contractor J.Derenzo Co., said in a statement. “There are no words that appropriately describe the loss of Peter Monsini, our JDC Demolition teammate. Our thoughts, prayers and condolences are with Peter and his family. We ask that you please respect the privacy of Peter’s family and colleagues during this difficult time.”

The 1960s-era parking garage is being partly demolished as part of the Bulfinch Crossing redevelopment project, which includes the Sudbury apartment-condominium tower completed in 2021 and the One Congress office tower which is still under construction. In January, the Boston Planning & Development Agency approved a 410,000-square-foot office-lab building for the eastern side of the site, nearest to the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway.

Developer HYM Investment Group and its partner, National Real Estate Advisors, said in a statement they were “heartbroken and devastated by the news of the tragic accident.”

“The safety of the women and men that work on our developments is our greatest priority and we have shut down all aspects of the demolition of the garage and will not resume work until we are satisfied it is safe to do so,” the developers stated.

The MBTA indefinitely suspended service on portions of two subway lines that run beneath the property, pending structural inspections of their tunnels. Service is suspended from North Station to Back Bay on the Orange Line and from North Station to Government Center on the Green Line. Surrounding surface roads reopened Monday morning.

The accident is under investigation by the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, Boston police department and OSHA.
