Lego Group picked a high-profile site at the edge of Boston’s central business district for its new global headquarters as it prepares to leave its suburban Connecticut office space.

The toymaker leased over 100,000 square feet at 1001 Boylston St., the air rights project rising above the Massachusetts Turnpike in Back Bay. Lego will occupy five floors in the new office tower, which also has leased 275,000 square feet for Cambridge-based CarGurus’ new headquarters.

In announcing its plans to relocate to Boston in 2026, Lego in January cited its desire to tap into the region’s talent pool and offer a signature brick-and-mortar workspace. The company has existing offices in Back Bay at 501 Boylston St.

“1001 Boylston Street represents an investment in our future and a commitment to our employees. We believe that a modern, collaborative work environment will help creativity and innovation thrive, and we’re excited to see what we can accomplish in this new space,” Lego Group Americas President Skip Kodak said in a statement.

The company announced that it will begin a partial occupancy of the space in mid-2025. The toymaker had focused on high-profile new and recent buildings in its office space search, brokerage sources said.

Developed by Samuels & Assoc. on air rights leased from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, the project includes the office tower and CitizenM hotel on either sides of the Massachusetts Turnpike, linked by a half-acre public plaza.

“As we continue to make Boston the best city for families and a world-class hub for innovation, we look forward to supporting LEGO Group as they transition into this new Back Bay headquarters where they will inspire generations to come,” Boston Mayor Michelle Wu said in a statement.

Lego Group’s headquarters have been located in Enfield, Connecticut since 1975.
