LCU logo"Money Island" might sound like the kind of place increasingly cash-strapped parents may want to spend some vacation time, but it’s actually the name of an interactive video game developed by Leominster Credit Union to teach children financial fundamentals.

Money Island was developed as a teaching tool for both home and school, the credit union said. Lesson plans, quizzes, games and contests are part of the learning experience. When children aged 8-14 play Money Island, they enter a virtual world that tracks and encourages their progress. As they go on quests to destinations like the Eiffel Tower and the lost city of Atlantis, they learn real-life principles of financial responsibility.

Children can even earn real-life rewards as they go on these quests around the world. They can play at home or entire classrooms can embark on the quests together, according to a statement.
