Martha's Vineyard HospitalA new 90,000-square-foot, 24-bed hospital on Martha’s Vineyard is set to open this spring.

It took about 2 ½ years to complete the construction project. The community launched a campaign in 2004 after the hospital board agreed the present building had reached the end of its useful life and that renovation was not an option.

The hospital is expected to be fully permitted and receive patients in its new building in May. Since 2006, Martha’s Vineyard Hospital has been an affiliate of Massachusetts General Hospital and a member of its parent organization, Partners HealthCare System.

The project is expected to achieve a LEED Silver rating, through the U.S. Green Building Council. Brigham and Women’s in Boston is the only hospital in the Bay State to receive the LEED Silver designation; none has ever attained LEED Gold, according to a statement.

The two-story brick building was built by Boston-based Columbia Construction and designed by architects Thomas, Miller & Partners, PLLC, of Brentwood, Tenn.

"Columbia Construction has been a valuable partner and a tremendous asset to me and to the hospital throughout our project," said Timothy Walsh, president and CEO of Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. "They had the essential staff and expertise to help us navigate the logistical, community, environmental and technical challenges inherent in building a replacement hospital on an island. Columbia has done a fantastic job."
