friendlys-logoAlmost half of the 63 Friendly’s Ice Cream Corp. restaurants closed after the parent company of the struggling casual dining chain filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy are in Massachusetts.

A total of 30 Massachusetts locations of the Wilbraham-based chain have been shuttered as a result of the bankruptcy. Each location employed approximately 20 people, according to the Associated Press.

The 76-year-old company, known for its ice cream and hamburgers, said the economic downturn coupled with higher costs and high rents drove it to file for bankruptcy protection.

Friendly’s said it has secured $70 million in financing, and that its 424 remaining restaurants nationwide will stay open as it reorganizes under bankruptcy protection. Gift cards will continue to be honored.
