As the season synonymous with giving begins, the Massachusetts Bankers Association Charitable Foundation has released the list of recipients of its community grants for 2004.

The grants total $100,000 and will be awarded to 18 nonprofit agencies throughout Massachusetts.

The Foundation, supported by its 220 member banks throughout Massachusetts and New England, distributed the grants over eight geographic regions, awarding funds to health and social service agencies across Massachusetts.

The awards range from $2,500 to $10,000. Some of the recipients include: Boy Scouts of America Minuteman Council, Father Bill’s Place in Quincy, Dorchester-based Project Hope, Medford Family Life Education Center, The Open Door/Cape Ann Food Pantry in Gloucester, YMCA of Greater Lawrence, Martha’s Vineyard Community Services, Residential Care Consortium in Fall River, the Spanish American Center in Leominster, Springfield Boys & Girls Club, Berkshire Food Project and Berkshire South Regional Community Center.

Each recipient will be honored at an individual awards ceremony in its local area.

Since it was created in 1998, the Massachusetts Bankers Association Charitable Foundation has given away $600,000.

“To be able to contribute these funds, even in modest amounts, is such a joy,” said Jan A. Miller, chairman of the Massachusetts Bankers Association Charitable Foundation and president of Wainwright Bank & Trust Co. “There are so many good causes that need funding all across the Bay State; we’re pleased to be able to help out 18 of them through this foundation and recognize the many Massachusetts banks that annually support hundreds of others.”

The Massachusetts Bankers Association Charitable Foundation said the awards are not only a recognition of outstanding community service, but are also representative of the many donations banks across the state regularly make to organizations and causes in their local communities.

In addition to the more than $40 million a year given to local charities, MBA member bank employees contribute thousands of volunteer hours across the commonwealth.
