Mutual Bank has broken ground on its 10th branch. The new location will be the bank’s second in Whitman, where it was founded in 1877.

"We are delighted to expand our presence in our hometown of Whitman," said CEO Glen White in a statement. "Our goal is to offer even greater convenience for our Whitman current customers, and serve a wider market that travels the two busy commuter corridor that meet here."

The new 5,600-square-foot, two-story branch is at 342 Bedford St., and is scheduled to be completed in the second quarter of 2013. The first floor will be a full-service banking center, with lending offices on the second floor.  

The branch will "absolutely the right piece of the puzzle for this particular intersection of town," said Bob Curran, building commissioner for the town of Whitman, in a statement.

Kurt Raber of Brown Lindquist Fenuccio & Raber Architects, Inc. in Yarmouthport is the lead designer and the contractor for the project will be Coastal Construction Corp. of Duxbury.
