Even though it is over $14 million off its first-year monthly revenue projections, the president of MGM Resorts International is calling the company’s Springfield casino a success.

MGM Springfield has attracted 6 million visitors since it opened last August. MGM President Mike Mathis told MassLive.com the casino has successfully defied “the naysayers.”

The casino made $20.4 million in gross revenues in July, a 2.23 percent increase over gaming revenues in June. MGM estimated the Springfield facility would gross around $34.8 million per month in its first year.

Despite the shortfall, the casino has managed to draw marketshare away from Connecticut’s casinos month after month. However, it remains to be seen whether Wynn Resorts’ new Encore Boston Harbor casino will dent MGM Springfield’s take.
