Marijuana at the mall? In Springfield, it’s looking like it will soon stop being the sole province of disaffected teens and start being the realm of economic development.

The city council voted Monday night to allow marijuana cultivation at the Eastfield Mall after Cannaworld/Cannamundo Inc. petitioned the city to allow it to open a marijuana retail store on the first floor of the mall’s former Macy’s space and a cultivation and manufacturing operation on its second floor. The building’s gross floor area is 144,900 square feet, according to city property records. MassLive was first to report the decision.

The mall’s owner, Mountain Development Corp., had previously told the city it hoped the operation would let them attract other alternative healthcare businesses.

The mall’s zoning previously would not have permitted the industrial components of the operation. The mall’s Macy’s store closed in 2016. Its Sears store closed in 2018, leaving it with only a movie theater as an anchor.
