A former bank executive faces sentencing for rigging bids on Fleet Bank’s sale of distressed loans.

Kevin O’Keefe, a former vice president at the bank, is scheduled to be sentenced Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Hartford. He pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit financial institution bribery and bank fraud.

Prosecutors said the 51-year-old Middletown resident conspired to create shell companies bidding for Fleet’s distressed loans. Authorities said O’Keefe used his position to obtain confidential information he supplied to others involved in the scheme, excluded competitive bidders and provided outdated information so others would submit artificially low bids.

O’Keefe’s attorney said in court papers he has turned his life around and suggested home confinement may be the best punishment. (AP)
