Stoneham Police on Monday arrested a suspect allegedly involved in a string of bank robberies.

James Twombly of Hingham has been charged with the unarmed bank robbery on May 4 at a Bank of America branch located at 323 Main St. in Stoneham. He will likely faces additional charges, authorities said, as police suspect he “was likely behind” four additional bank robberies north and south of Boston.

Video surveillance at the Stoneham BofA on May 4 showed the suspect give a bank teller a handwritten note demanding money. The teller handed the suspect an unknown amount of cash before he fled out the front door.

Upon viewing still images from recent area bank robberies, officers determined the same suspect was likely behind four other bank robberies, including Citizens Bank in Quincy, Brookline Bank in Medford, Randolph Savings Bank in Randolph and Dedham Savings Bank in Dedham.

Stoneham Detective Chris Dalis investigated the case along with the FBI Bank Robbery Task Force.

Dalis posted the suspect’s photos from the Stoneham robbery on Massmostwanted.org. The photo was also distributed to local media outlets, some of which aired the photos of the suspect on local news, including Bob Ward from Fox 25 News.

Several tips alerted police that the suspect was likely Twombly. Dalis then ran his information through the Registry of Motor Vehicles and matched his driver’s license photo to the surveillance images. A background check revealed Twombly is on probation until April 2016. A probation official confirmed Twombly’s identity.

Dalis obtained a warrant for Twombly ‘s arrest on Monday afternoon through the Woburn District Court. He then notified the Dedham, Medford, Randolph and Quincy police departments, as well as members of the FBI Bank Robbery Task Force.

Later that day, police received word that Twombly was in Kingston. Units from Dedham, Medford and Quincy police departments responded to the area and were able to stop Twombly in his vehicle and arrest him without incident.
