‘We’re Not Fine’: New Numbers Add to Mass. Population Concerns

The population of Massachusetts shrunk by nearly 8,000 people between July 2021 and July 2022, a drop of about 0.1 percent, but the newest estimate released in fresh data from the U.S. Census Bureau puts the state’s population ahead of its revised 2020 Census level.

The state’s U.S. Census liaison is reporting “encouraging numbers” about population growth ahead of next year’s Census, with the largest population increases since the 2010 Census in the cities of Boston, Cambridge, Somerville, Everett and Lowell.
